Division 5.1 Solid Oxidizer Test

5.1 Solid Oxidizer Test

The Division 5.1 Solid Oxidizer Test (5.1 UN Manual of tests and Criteria) measures the potential of a solid substance to increase the burn rate or intensity of a combustible substance (cellulose) when the two are mixed thoroughly in two different ratios. The average burn time of five trials for each ratio tested are compared to the average burn times of five trials for three different ratios of a mixture of a known oxidizer (potassium bromated) and cellulose to determine if the substance is considered by UN/DOT to be Division 5.1 Solid Oxidizer and, if it is, what Packing Group the substance should be classified as.
